Rehabilitation for Graves' orbitopathy
Información
Graves' orbitopathy is an autoimmune disease caused by antibodies directed against receptors present on thyroid cells and also on the surface of cells within the orbit, producing an increase in the size of the extraocular muscles and intraorbital fat, which results in exophthalmos (protrusion of the eyeballs) or a 'bulging eyes' appearance.
The first step is to treat the inflammatory stage of the disease medically and compensate for the thyroid status to proceed with orbital rehabilitation when the disease is in its stable stage.
Surgical rehabilitation in Graves' orbitopathy is a set of surgical procedures that help correct the alterations caused by this disease. Before starting this rehabilitation stage, it is necessary to confirm that the disease has been stable for at least 6 months. This rehabilitation consists of a series of surgeries at the level of the orbital bones to increase the space of the orbit, reduce eyelid retraction, and correct strabismus if necessary.
