Tear duct obstruction
Información
Tear duct obstruction is a condition in which tears cannot drain properly from the surface of the eye to the nose due to a blockage or obstruction in the tear drainage system. This can result in symptoms such as constant tearing, a watery eye sensation, irritation, and possibly recurrent infections in the area of the lacrimal sac.
Common causes of this obstruction include inflammation, narrowing, or blockage of the tear duct, often related to aging. It can also be the result of an infection, recurrent conjunctivitis, trauma to the tear duct, congenital malformations, a history of trauma, or tumors.
Treatment for tear duct obstruction depends on its cause and severity. It may include procedures such as tear duct probing in children to open the blocked duct, or even surgery to create a new drainage pathway known as dacryocystorhinostomy.
